Assessments

To apply for a dedicated status as a hunter or sport shooter status, one must first complete and pass the prescribed theoretical and practical assessment. The member is then required complete an online dedicated status application form from their profile area. A short motivation needs to be supplied during the application.

• The official results from the service provider must be uploaded when completing the online application form.
• The results of the practical and theoretical assessment must be clearly stated in this report

Online Assessment

The theoretical assessment for the dedicated sports person is based on the knowledge and understanding.

The following topics to understand are:

• Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000
• Basic Firearm Safety
• Shooting Range Rules
• Firearm Parts and Mechanics

The theoretical assessment for the dedicated hunter is based on the knowledge and understanding.

• Basic Firearm Safety
• Hunting Ordinances and Proclamation
• Hunting Ethics

These assessments can be taken online from your courses section in your profile area:

• A minimum of 70% must be achieved to pass the assessment
• You may study any of the topics in your own time before taking the assessment using any of your own reading material or those supplied online.
• Once you start the assessment, you can choose one topic at a time, read through the information provided and then answer the questions that follow.
• Once you have completed the assessment, you can print the completion certificate for your records
• You still need to follow the process of applying for dedicated status using the online application form from the profile area

Practical Assessment

The practical assessment target (DS Assessment Target) must be used for this exercise. Targets can be downloaded from the documents tab in the profile area . The target must be set up according to rules and the table below. See last column for the applicable dedicated status.

• If a Rifle or Handgun is used for the assessment, you are required to shoot 5 shots in your own time.
• If the assessment is done using a shotgun, any of the known shotgun shooting events can be used (trap, skeet, sporting, compact sporting for dedicated Hunter status, any other discipline can be used for dedicated sports shooting, like 3 gun or tactical shooting) A photo or copy of the scorecard needs t be uploaded with the application.
• A minimum of 60% must be achieved as a pass mark for any of the assessment types
• For any of the rifle assessments, centre fire and rim fire, the exercise is shot from a shooting bench and only a front rest may be used. No back rests are allowed
• All the handgun assessments must be done from the standing position with no support except for a hunting handgun where a rest is allowed
• Shotgun assessments positions are done as per the rules of the specific shotgun discipline.
• All assessments should be done on a formal public shooting range.
• Targets must be signed by the member and the range officer.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

• If you currently have a dedicated status with another association, you may use this to apply for your ECGMA dedicated status.
• The following information is needed:
• Letter of good standing from your association
• Proof of dedicated status
• Completed online application form from the profile area
• Acceptance of the Dedicated Declaration
• The application is subject to approval

Applications

To apply for a dedicated hunter status, a member must first complete and pass the prescribed theoretical and practical exam. The member is then required to complete the dedicated application form found in the application section in the, “My Profile,” page once logged in.

• Practical exam must be shot at a shooting range using the “Assessment Target” and uploaded to the system. You need to achieve a 60% pass mark.
• Dedicated Hunter and / or Sports shooter theoretical assessment can be done online. You need to achieve a 70% pass mark.
• Fully completed application plus your motivation and additional supporting information where applicable.

Recognition of Prior Learning

ECGMA will accept any dedicated status awarded to the applicant if the dedicated status was awarded by another South African accredited association and the member is still a member in good standing at the time of the application. Documentary proof of your current valid status and membership must be provided at the time of the application. These documents must also be uploaded through the on-line system.

ALL Applications to become a dedicated sports shooter will be subject to approval

Maintain your Dedicated Status

To maintain your dedicated status, a member must participate in at least two related activities per annum.The term related refers to activity that are related to sport shooting activities that are set out under the sport shooting rules. For dedicated sport shooting status, any of the prescribed sports shooting event may be shot.

Any member who has a dedicated status, must before 1 December of each year, submit the activities on-line. By submitting the activity in the prescribed manner, the member automatically declares that the information submitted is true and correct and the association will accept it as such. Any activity that is uploaded to the system is subject to approval.

NOTE: It is the responsibility of the association to verify the bona fides of each dedicated member to remain an association in good standing. The association may at its own discursion verify the details of an activity that was submitted.The onus remains on the member to keep in their possession, documentary proof of any activity which was submitted to remain a dedicated member.In the event that a member has had unfortunate circumstances that none of the prescribed activities could be met, a submission with a motivation must be submitted, stating the reasons for non-compliance. (Motivations will be accepted for extensive travels, sickness or health issues, firearm repairs which rendered the firearm unusable for the period)
